The Pregame Show

Welcome to Ballcap Sports! A blog featuring my thoughts and observations on the world of sports, put on display to be mocked by the public. I’m known for having (and sharing) endless opinions, and the way I see it, why let my wife suffer alone? I have some big, important thoughts on why things are the way they are, and instead of just going on about it to my friends all the time, I figured I could put these thoughts to slightly better use by sharing them with you, my hypothetical reader.

I wasn’t always a sports fan. I have the coordination of a drunk llama, so I never really played sports as a kid. In high school, gym class was something I had to survive until I graduated. And at home, the Super Bowl was just something that my dad watched. For high school Trevor, it was all about the nerdy things, like video games, anime, and pro wrestling. This is why I was so popular in school, you see…

Things changed when I went to college. As I tried to figure out how to best connect with my new classmates, I found that talking about sports was an easy way to break the ice. And a simple way to get that conversation going was by wearing a ballcap. I can’t count how many times a stranger struck up a conversation with me just because of the hat I was wearing. It’s a beacon to other sports fans, right off the bat telling them a little bit about who you are. Do you cheer for the hometown heroes or do you prefer the powerhouse that’s been crushing the competition? Maybe you like underdogs and root for the guys still fighting to win their first championship. It’s all there on your hat. Wear the right one and you’ll find plenty of friends you haven’t met yet.

Discovering that was how I fell in love with sports. While I still can’t hit the broad side of a barn with any sports-related projectile you hand me, for me sports are more than just the activities themselves. They’re more than the teams and the players. It’s about the fans. All the heated debates that take place. The shared traditions and hopes for the future. The way a team can represent and even personify a community. Being a fan gives you the feeling that you belong to something bigger than yourself.

That’s the feeling I want to embrace with this blog. This will be a place where sports fans of all stripes can feel at home. I promise there will be absolutely no gate-keeping here. I don’t care if you’re trying to balance working on your six fantasy teams or if you only watch when your team is in the playoffs. As far as I’m concerned, the more the merrier!

Thanks for joining me as we dive into the crazy world of sports and sports fans. Put on your favourite ballcap and let’s have some fun.
